Built for Nectar, Not for Cracking Seed
A lorikeet's tongue ends in a brush of fine papillae that fan out to sweep nectar and pollen from flowers. Behind that specialised tongue sits a digestive tract suited to liquid and soft food: a comparatively simple, fast-moving gut that extracts nutrients from sugars, pollen protein and soft fruit rather than from tough seed kernels. They lack the grinding capacity that seed-eating parrots rely on, so a bowl of sunflower and safflower is not a treat for a lory — it is the wrong fuel entirely.

Wet nectar is also a growing medium. Left sitting, it ferments and supports bacterial and yeast growth quickly, and faster still in warm weather.

Bowls need proper washing and drying between servings, not a rinse. Many keepers run two sets so one is always clean and dry.

Why the Big Macaws Evolved on Oil-Rich Palm Nuts
Hyacinth macaws, and to varying degrees the other large macaws, come from habitats where hard-shelled palm nuts are a staple rather than a treat. Those nuts are dense, oily and physically demanding to open — the enormous beak of a hyacinth is a tool built for exactly that job. A bird whose natural food supply is high in fat has a metabolism, an activity budget and a digestive pattern shaped around it. Feeding that bird the same low-fat, pellet-and-vegetable plan you would give a smaller parrot can leave it underweight, poorly feathered and short of energy.
This is one of the clearest cases in aviculture where "fat is bad" simply does not translate. For a hyacinth, palm nuts and appropriate nuts in the shell are food, not junk food. They also deliver something else the bird needs: work. Cracking shells occupies the beak and the mind in a way a bowl of soft food never will.

Fat Tolerance Is Species- and Activity-Dependent
Two hyacinths of the same age can need very different amounts of nut. Consider:
- Flight and exercise. A bird flying daily in a large aviary burns what a cage-bound bird stores.
- Foraging workload. Nuts in the shell cost energy to open; shelled nuts in a bowl do not.
- Breeding and rearing. Demands rise sharply, then fall again when the season ends.
- Age and health status. Older or less mobile birds rarely need what a young, active bird does.
- Climate and housing. An outdoor bird in a cold season is not in the same position as one kept warm indoors.

Eclectus parrots are frequently described by aviculturists as having a proportionally longer digestive tract and a slower rate of passage than most other parrots of comparable size. Budgerigars, cockatiels and the Australian grass parakeets — Bourke's, scarlet-chested, turquoisine, elegant — evolved walking through grassland and stripping half-ripe seed heads, then covering distance to find the next patch. The seed they eat in the wild is green, hydrated and lower in fat than the dry sunflower-and-millet mixes sold in bags. Conures sit in a different niche again: opportunists that take fruit, seed, flowers and whatever else the season offers. None of these birds is simply "a small macaw." A diet that works for one will not automatically work for the others.

Sprouting shifts dry seed toward the fresher, living food these birds evolved to eat, and it gives fussy seed eaters something familiar to accept. Rinse thoroughly, sprout only to a short tail, refrigerate, and discard anything that smells sour — sprouts spoil fast.
Then make them earn it. Foraging enrichment burns calories and occupies birds that would otherwise sit at a full dish:
- Scatter-feed sprouts and chopped greens on a clean paper-lined tray so ground foragers can walk and hunt.
- Weave leafy greens, dandelion, chickweed or carrot tops through cage bars rather than dropping them in a bowl.
- Use shredding toys, paper cups and foraging wheels to hold the measured daily ration.
- Offer millet spray as a foraging job, not a free buffet.
Portion Control and the Slow Transition
Small birds hide weight gain under feathers. Buy a gram scale and weigh at the same time each day, before the first feed, and write it down — the numbers will tell you what your eyes will not.
To move a seed-addicted bird:
- Establish a baseline weight over a week before changing anything.
- Switch from free-feeding to two measured meals so the bird arrives hungry at new food.
- Introduce one new item at a time, offered warm, chopped and mixed with familiar seed.
- Gradually reduce the seed proportion over weeks, never abruptly.
- Stop and reassess if weight trends downward or droppings change.
